Thermophysical Transient Tester RTB 1.01
for measuring specific heat, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity.


Modern technology is looking for measuring methods that give reliable data of thermophysical parameters of broad class of materials in a short time. .The instrument is a result of know how that was reached due to various projects at which the staff of laboratory was confronted with different research goals as well as with requirements coming from the industry. The instrument gives specific heat, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity within a single measurement. 

Thermophysical Laboratory of SAS has developed an instrument Transient Tester RTB 1.01 that is based on the Pulse Transient Method. Theory, experimental arrangement and its application are described in the book by L. Kubicár: Pulse Method of Measuring Basic Thermophysical Parameters (Elsevier 1990). 

Transient methods especially Transient Pulse method posses the following advantages:

  1. Measuring process takes short time ranging from several seconds up to several hundreds of seconds

  2. Specimen can be used having considerable size range. Thus the reliable data of the thermophysical parameters on inhomogeneous – porous materials can be obtained. The method uses simple specimen geometry, namely rectangles.

  3. Three parameters can be obtained within a single measurement, namely specific heat, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity.

The instrument is aimed at metrological laboratories, laboratories involved in material research (investigation of the structural transition, structural relaxation – material ageing and investigation of the heat transport mechanism in porous materials) and testing laboratories (the optimisation of the technological processes and material testing). The instrument can be used for alloys, polymers, ceramics, glasses, products of the powder metallurgy, organic materials thermal insulation and porous materials.
